Automatic cleanup

Lunetta can automatically move old footage to the trash and permanently delete files when storage gets full. Both features are optional and configurable in Settings → Automatic cleanup.

Auto-trash by age

Set Trash after N days to automatically move footage to the trash after a number of days. Footage that has been sitting in the dashboard longer than the limit is moved to the trash on the next scan.

Set to 0 to disable this feature.

Example: set to 30 to keep 30 days of footage on the dashboard. Older recordings move to the trash but are not deleted immediately — you can still restore them from the trash.

Auto-delete by storage

Set Delete when storage exceeds N MB to permanently delete old footage when the footage folder grows beyond a size limit. The oldest events are deleted first until the folder is under the limit.

Set to 0 to disable this feature.

Example: set to 10000 (10 GB) to keep total storage under 10 GB. When a new scan finds the folder exceeds 10 GB, the oldest footage is permanently deleted — bypassing the trash.

Starred events are protected

Both auto-trash and auto-delete skip starred events. If you star an event, it will never be cleaned up automatically, regardless of age or storage limits.

Use stars to preserve important clips — a delivery, a visitor, an incident — while letting routine footage cycle out.

The trash

Footage moved to the trash (manually or by auto-trash) is not immediately deleted. It stays in the trash until:

  • You restore it (the event moves back to the dashboard)
  • You delete it from the trash (permanent)
  • An admin empties the trash

Go to Trash in the navigation to manage trashed footage. Admins can restore, permanently delete, or empty the entire trash.

Manual cleanup

To clean up manually without setting automatic limits:

  • Select events on the dashboard and click Trash in the bulk bar
  • Open the Trash page to permanently delete or restore individual events
  • Click Empty trash (admin only) to permanently delete everything in the trash at once

How cleanup runs

Automatic cleanup runs as part of every scan (cron job or Lunetta Ping trigger). It does not run in real time — footage is cleaned up the next time a scan completes after the threshold is exceeded.
